Adoption in Florida After Birth: Is It Still Possible?

Adoption in Florida

Many mothers think they have missed their chance to choose adoption once their baby is born. The truth is, that is not always the case.

If you are considering adoption in Florida, you may still have time to make an adoption plan, whether you’re expecting or your baby has already been born. It is never too late to learn about your options and ask questions.

At Adoption by Shepherd Care, we help birth mothers understand the adoption process with kindness, respect, and honest guidance. With more than 100 years of combined experience, we’ve helped birth mothers navigate the adoption process with compassionate guidance.

You Do Not Have to Decide During Pregnancy

Some women know they want adoption before their baby is born. You may have planned to parent but later realized you need another option. Others may face changes in their health, finances, work, or family life.  It is okay if your plans have changed.

How Does Adoption in Florida Work?

  • The first step is to connect with our adoption professional. You can ask questions, learn how adoption works, and understand your choices. If you decide adoption is right for you, we’ll help you create a personalized adoption plan.
  • Some make an adoption plan before birth. Others make one after their baby arrives. The adoption plan will be based on your preference. You get to choose from three types of adoption plans: open, semi–open, or closed.
  • Based on this, you can choose the adoptive family, decide the type of contact you want after placement, and share your wishes for your child’s future.
  • After this, we will provide you with a list of adoptive family profiles. You can review each and choose a family for your baby. If you choose to meet the family, we will help arrange the virtual meeting.

Throughout the process, what matters most is making the decision that feels right for you and your child.

Support Through and After the Placement

When you work with Adoption by Shepherd Care, you’ll receive support throughout the adoption process. Based on Florida law, we will provide specific assistance with medical care, housing, transportation, and other pregnancy-related expenses when permitted under Florida law.

Official Statement from
Adoption by Shepherd Care

It has come to our attention that the Hulu series Good American Family contains inaccurate information regarding Adoption by Shepherd Care (ASC) and the adoption of Natalia. We would like to take this opportunity to clarify the facts.

Contrary to what is presented in the documentary, ASC did not initiate any communication or have any involvement with Mr. or Mrs. Barnett in connection to Natalia’s adoption. The legal adoption process for Natalia was completed in the state of New Hampshire, where the original adoptive family resided, and was facilitated through a New Hampshire-based agency—not Adoption by Shepherd Care.

For those seeking further clarification, we encourage you to watch The Curious Case of Natalia Grace, Season 2, Episode 1, which clearly states that Adoption by Shepherd Care was not the agency responsible for facilitating this adoption.

We want to express our respect for all agencies and professionals engaged in this vital work. However, it is essential that accurate information is shared with the public and that the correct entities are acknowledged for their role in any adoption process.

At Adoption by Shepherd Care, we remain steadfast in our mission to place children in safe, loving, and permanent homes. We uphold the highest standards of professionalism, ethical practice, and compassion for the children and families we serve.

We respectfully request that the media and members of the public refrain from further spreading misinformation related to this matter. While we understand the interest in this case, we also urge respect for the privacy and dignity of all individuals involved. Adoption is a deeply personal and emotional journey that must be approached with sensitivity and integrity.

Adoption by Shepherd Care will continue its unwavering commitment to finding loving and permanent placements for children, guided by the principles of honesty, compassion, and respect.
